2026 Vintage Report

2026 was defined by precision. The 2026 growing season in Hawke’s Bay opened with a dry, hot spring, setting the tone for a vintage where timing and patience mattered more than anything else. Two early summer rain events provided just enough relief to lift the canopy at the right moment, before the season returned to long dry days and cooler nights through late summer and early autumn.

These conditions created an ideal balance between ripening power and natural freshness. At Te Mata Estate, we worked day by day in the vineyards, allowing full physiological ripeness to develop through extended hang time. With pristine fruit condition across all sites, harvest decisions were made deliberately and selectively, guided by experience and an intimate understanding of each vineyard block.

The result is a vintage of clarity, depth and expression.

Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay show outstanding purity and drive, combining concentration and texture with a vibrant line of acidity that gives real tension and energy.

Pinot Noir is especially promising, with each parcel showing its own personality and detail, building layers of perfume, structure, and what we often call true “pinosity.”

Our 2026 Syrah is rich in colour and presence this year, delivering dark fruit depth wrapped in fine, silky tannins.

The Bordeaux varieties, and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular, are shaping up with real distinction: expressive, structured, and generous, yet held in balance by a natural restraint that speaks clearly of place.

Overall, 2026 is a vintage of patience rewarded, where careful timing and Hawke’s Bay’s natural rhythm have aligned to produce wines of detail, energy, and richness.
