The arrival of new Cabernet Sauvignon clones at Te Mata Estate marks an important moment in the long arc of the winery’s red wine programme. These young vines, now ready for planting, represent years of research, international collaboration, and careful intention, all directed toward the future quality and expression of Te Mata’s Cabernet-based blends.
‘It’s a rare event that the founder of Te Mata Estate winery in Hawke’s Bay, John Buck, now in his 80s, calls Huon Hooke up on the phone. He wanted to tell me about his friendship with Dr Bailey Carrodus, the founder of Yarra Yering winery in the Yarra Valley.’

Toby is the first New Zealander (or Australian) invited to join The Vintners’ Company in London, a 661-year old guild institution. Even more special was that Toby got to share the occasion with John Buck, who visited from New Zealand to attend.
