• Coleraine: A New Era

Te Mata Estate held a tasting of fifteen vintages of Coleraine, stretching back more than forty years. It was an extraordinary opportunity to look at innovation and continuation within Coleraine’s development, and how the wine has evolved over four decades.

  • Coleraine as Investment Class

‘Aotearoa produces premium wine that tops the award charts globally. The country’s cool climate and temperate weather conditions are optimal for growing grapes, allowing for the production of distinct flavour profiles and artisanal high quality. For this reason, many wine enthusiasts will have the first of March pencilled in their calendars, and quite rightly so, as it is the annual release of Te Mata Estate’s flagship Coleraine.

  • Five Stars for Coleraine ’23

‘Breed, rather than brute power, is the hallmark of Coleraine, estate-grown in the Havelock North Hills and matured in French oak barriques, predominantly new. This notably graceful red is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (80%), merlot (15%) and cabernet franc (5%). Dark and purple-flushed, it is mouthfilling with dense, well-ripened blackcurrent, plum and spice flavours, oak complexity, and a finely structured, very harmonious finish. Best drinking 2030+ (13.5% alc/vol).’ Michael Cooper, The Listener 2025

  • New Zealand’s Oldest Winery?

Te Mata Estate sits beneath the Te Mata Peak in Hawke’s Bay, a place where New Zealand wine history is unusually tangible. Founded in the 1890s, the estate is often described as the country’s oldest winery – yet that claim is frequently misunderstood.

  • Bob Campbell MW – Bullnose ’20

‘Deep, purple-tinted syrah with a wonderfully fine-grained, perfectly-pitched texture. Flavours include cassis, plum, dark berries, anise, black pepper, floraland red rose together with spicy oak. A very impressive wine.’

  • Huon Hooke – Coleraine ’20

‘Very deep, bold, bright purple/red colour, the aromas similarly impressive for their concentration and vibrancy. A sensational cabernet blend, gorgeously flavoured and perfumed, profound and lingering.’
