All Te Mata Estate wines are made using regenerative farming and precision viticulture – systems that include biodynamics and organics. Our vineyard teams are specialists in this area. Throughout our winemaking we use a mix of the latest technology and classical technique.

As much as we love and care for our vineyards, we are just as committed to supporting our local community and giving back to a number of Hawke’s Bay organisations. For all aspects environmental, social and economic sustainability, Te Mata Estate is committed to improving our performance every day.

Te Mata is also a proud SWNZ member, a system established in 1995 as an industry initiated program directed through New Zealand Winegrowers. SWNZ aims to minimize any impact on the environment in the vineyard and winery and to continually monitor and reduce the use of power, water and fuel resources.

Te Mata Estate’s vineyards were amongst the first to be accredited in 1995, as was the winery in 2005, when we were part of a very small initial group having all vineyards and the winery certified.

We filter and recycle water onsite, create our own vineyard composting, maintain wildflowers plantings. and reduce our overall carbon footprint by keeping all our processes on the one site. Low transport times between our vineyards and our cellar and bottling line also ensure the protection and quality of our product.

Every Te Mata Estate wine displays the SWNZ symbol as your assurance that all of our wine production, from vine to bottle, is fully audited and accredited.

Te Mata invests significantly in experimentation and research – from using only recycled glass for all our bottles, to working with the Callaghan Institute, to planting chicory between our vines in winter.

Many of the steps we take are small, but crucial, 1% improvements.

Since there are so many of these everyday forward steps in technology and techniques, we have a lot of content and info to share. Sign up to our newsletter, or follow us online, for all the latest news.

We use #tematastories and #betterneverstops for our sustainability journey online. If you have questions you can also contact us directly.
