Zara ’13 has a pale gold colour with the classic apricot-scented character of serious viognier. Very complex notes of mandarin, nougat, jasmine, lychee and hazel nuts are also evident, and the palate is concentrated and soft, with a lovely, lingering mouth feel.
Zara ’13 is closed with a 'Diam' cork, which eliminates any possibility of cork taint, allowing continued evolution in bottle for five years from harvest.
Total acidity as tartaric: 6.3g/l
Residual sugar: Dry
WINEMAKING The individually handled ferments were blended to enhance the wine’s varietal complexity. The finished wine was fined before bottling in January 2014.
VINEYARDS On 23 March 2013, fully ripe viognier grapes were hand harvested in several passes across the sloping middle terrace of Te Mata Estate’s Woodthorpe Terraces Vineyard.
ORIGIN Zara is affectionately named after Zara Buck, the first born child of the third generation of Te Mata Estate’s Buck family. Zara spent her childhood playing amongst the vines at the vineyard which is home to this delightful viognier.
Zara '13 - 'Brilliant, light golden lemony-yellow colour. Showing pure apricot, citrus zest and exotic floral Viognier fruit that is interwoven with layers of interest. The palate has real presence, with a myriad of nuances on the finish. This is an elegant, yet powerful Viognier with purity and length.' 19/20 ★★★★★Raymond Chan, Raymond Chan Wine Review - Te Mata Estate Showcase Summary, 2014 All Reviews
